How to bring your Letterboxd films to emberslate

  1. Export from Letterboxd

On Letterboxd, go to Settings, then Data, and export your data. You get a zip. Keep it as it is.

  2. Install emberslate

emberslate is available now on Google Play for Android. Install it and sign in.

  3. Import and review

Choose Letterboxd in emberslate's import and pick the zip. Check the matched films and deselect anything you don't want.

  4. Add your shows

Apply the import, then add the series you watch. Films and shows share one history, one set of stats and one watchlist.

What carries over

  • Every film you logged as watched
  • Diary dates as your watch dates
  • Star ratings, with half stars kept (3½★ becomes 7/10)
  • Liked films as favourites, and your watchlist

Reviews, comments and your profile are not read. Films you removed from your diary on Letterboxd stay removed. A film logged with no diary entry is imported without a date, and emberslate does not make one up.

Questions

Coming from Letterboxd

Is there a Letterboxd for TV shows?

Letterboxd itself covers films. emberslate tracks both films and TV series, episode by episode, with ratings, a dated history, stats and discussion, and it can import your Letterboxd films so you start with your film diary already in place.

What carries over from Letterboxd?

The films you logged as watched, the first diary date for each as its watch date, your current ratings, the films you liked as favourites, and your watchlist. You review the matches before anything is applied, and the import never overwrites entries already in your emberslate library.

How are star ratings converted?

emberslate rates out of ten, so Letterboxd's half stars are doubled: 3½★ becomes 7, 5★ becomes 10. Nothing is rounded away.

Does it import my reviews?

No. Reviews, comments and your profile details are not read. Films you deleted from your diary on Letterboxd are not imported either.

Is emberslate free?

Yes. All emberslate features are currently free, including release reminders, themes, advanced stats and your full timeline history. There is no advertising in the app. Pricing may change as the app grows, and we will explain any change before it affects you.

Is emberslate connected to Letterboxd?

No. emberslate is an independent app made by emberfold labs. It is not affiliated with Letterboxd; it reads the export file Letterboxd provides.
